Good Vibes and Vegan Food at Goodsouls Kitchen
Goodsouls Kitchen is a vegan cafe and restaurant inside Chiang Mai’s Old City. They offer all-day breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts, all made with fresh, high quality ingredients.
The interior feels like a French inspired diner with a retro vibe. There’s aircon, and jazz music playing in the background. I’ve found it to be the perfect spot for breakfast, morning coffee and an undisturbed work session. I really liked the relaxed feel and atmosphere, it seemed perfect any time of day - try their fresh smoothie bowls or delicious mango pancakes with homemade coconut yoghurt for breakfast, or indulge in some vegan cakes and sweets for afternoon tea. Or, even better, try their famous burger and chips for dinner.
While the burger is what they (and their sister restaurant Reform Kafe) are known for, I liked their country fries even better (the ones that come with the burger though, not the side dish (which has curry powder on it and changes the amazing taste of the original country fries)). The salad was great as well, I loved that they serve Kombucha, and the service was up to scratch.
I also tried the coconut pie for dessert - though apparently popular, it wasn’t my favourite dish. The hot chocolate with almond milk was delicious though, and I especially loved that they didn’t add any sugar (worth pointing out). They give you the option of adding coconut sugar on your own (which I didn’t use).
Prices are more expensive than at a cheap Thai corner restaurant, but also not too expensive for a healthy meal in a cool (even literally cool = air conditioned) and relaxed place if you need a break from the heat and humidity.
After visiting for dinner the first night, I went back a few more times in the morning. I liked working there - it’s a great space to sit for a few hours, you don’t feel pressured to leave or buy more, I liked their coffee (with your choice of nut milk) and all the breakfast food. The mango pancakes were delicious (I’m sure the banana ones are too), and the chocolate smoothie bowl is one of the best I’ve had! It was super creamy and chocolatey, but without sugar, only natural sweetness from the bananas. It tasted kind of like chocolate ice cream - only that it’s a much healthier and vegan version. Definitely a great choice for afternoon dessert, or if you want a sweet, indulgent-tasting, but won’t leave you feeling bad kind of breakfast.
As always, the hardest part is choosing from the extensive menu, so you’ll probably end up going back a few times. I can’t blame you, fear of missing out on great food is a real thing.
