Getting Back into Flow at The Chillhouse
The Chillhouse in Canggu is a relaxed lifestyle retreat, including accommodation along with organic food at its in-house cafe Cassava, yoga sessions, surfing, and a wide range of cultural and healing activities.
The Chillhouse is aimed at young people (around 25-40 according to their website), and seems to be popular with solo travellers as well as families. It’s nice to see that the space welcomes and attracts anybody of any age, not just backpackers or young people.
When I arrived at The Chillhouse I got a fresh young coconut with a #iamnotplastic straw as a welcome drink, as well as breakfast vouchers and two free classes of yoga a day. I signed up to a couple of classes over the next two days - it felt so nice to exercise, get back into yoga and move my body in a mindful way.
The first word that comes to mind to describe both The Chillhouse and Cassava is “relaxed”. As soon as you step through its doors you can feel the relaxed Bali surfer and yoga vibe. Their branding in that regard is very much on point.
Talking about branding - Cassava’s Instagram account has to be THE number one best curated Instagram account of any cafe I’ve ever come across. I can’t even imagine how much work, thought and effort goes into it. Their story highlights are awesome and helpful as well, especially for people who like to photograph their food, as they show images of each dish. Or for people like me who can’t decide what they want to eat until they’ve seen what each option looks like. ;)
Cassava is very focused on zero waste and serves only plant based, organic whole foods, which are locally sourced (all the perfect values!). It’s a big open space overlooking one of the pools with a very light and airy vibe, and rustic tables and wooden chairs, reminding me of some Melbournian cafes infused with a Bali beach vibe.
It’s a great place to get some work done while you’re staying at The Chillhouse with power outlets all along the back seating area. The staff is also accommodating if you have special food requests like me. For example, I got pandan leaves in my ginger and lemongrass tea, as well as a half-size only chocolate smoothie (I wanted to save some space for my late afternoon lunch/early dinner).
After a swim I went back to Cassava for my late afternoon lunch. I got the Mezza bowl, which was great and exactly what I needed that day. Fresh, clean, healthy, nourishing, and vegan (tzatziki replaced with plain coconut yoghurt).
The next day I had the perfect breakfast! While I absolutely love indulgent hotel breakfast buffets, I love a healthy breakfast like the one at Cassava just as much (maybe even more). My body and mind feel so much clearer after eating clean, nourishing food.
Apart from tasting great, it was also the perfect colour combination of breakfast items. I was very tempted to order the exact same thing again the next morning, just so I could eat it straight away without photographing all the food first (it was so good, and I’m sure would have tasted even better while still hot). Of course I didn’t though… I had to get a variety of photos.
For breakfast you get to choose one main dish from the menu, two sides, as well as their juice of the day and a hot drink. Definitely order the slow roasted cherry tomatoes as a side, they were SOOO good! And if you eat eggs and want them medium boiled, ask for soft boiled. If you want them soft, then maybe ask for them being a bit undone... ;)
One more tip regarding food and yoga: leave enough time between breakfast and your morning yoga session. I underestimated the amount of time it would take to order, wait for the food to come out, photograph it, eat, and relax for a bit before doing yoga… 15 minutes rest to digest certainly isn’t enough. Plus you might want to brush your teeth as well. The morning yoga session was still great, but I’m sure my vinyasa would have flowed a little easier without a full belly to accompany it.
On my second morning I made a better choice (thank you Cassava staff for being accommodating) - I had one part of my breakfast before the yoga session to give me some energy and keep my blood sugar levels stable, then ordered the two sides after class. I went for ‘Swiss Swoo’ - flax seed bircher muesli topped with fruit and coconut yoghurt, as well as avocado on toast (and got those amazing cherry tomatoes again as an extra).
It all tasted good, but I definitely recommend the Tiramisu pancakes over the fruit and muesli jars. I personally wasn’t too keen on the coconut yoghurt, it just didn’t feel great in my stomach.
Overall, my stay at The Chillhouse and the food at Cassava were great. Very revitalising, energising and cleansing for my body and mind after too much Balinese food (which wasn’t very healthy) and many indulgent hotel breakfast spreads.
